Laser Ablation Therapy For Varicose Veins

Laser ablation is a safe and simple treatment that is done in our office. It uses light energy to heat the inside of the vein, which closes it down. Once this happens, it allows healthier veins to take over the work. The procedure is quick and nearly painless, so you can choose to be either sedated or awake. You are awake and alert during the procedure. There is a short recovery period in our office, and you are able to walk out afterwards.

How is it done?

Your vein doctor will locate the target vein using an image guided catheter (a thin, flexible tube) through a tiny incision in the skin. The laser fiber is fed through the catheter where it heats the wall of the vein in small segments. This closes (ablates) the vein which will eventually disappear.

What happens when that vein goes away?

After the vein disappears, your body re-routes the blood to healthier veins improving flow in the leg. Over time, your leg pain and visible signs will lessen, as well as other related symptoms.

What can you expect after the treatment?

After the treatment you’ll need to wear a compression stocking for a week or so to help with healing. Most patients are able to return to work the next day. The doctors encourage you to remain active, just avoid strenuous activity for several weeks to give yourself time to heal.
