Varithena – New Treatment for Varicose Veins

The FDA recently approved a new treatment for varicose veins called Varithena. Just as varicose veins come in different shapes and sizes, so do treatments. Varithena’s uses a unique micro-foam formulation with allows it to be used to treat both the great saphenous vein (GSV) and small saphenous vein (SSV). Varithena is injected into the varicose vein where the micro-foam interacts with the inner lining of the damaged vein, causing it to collapse and close. Blood naturally re-routes to healthier veins.

How is it done?
Your doctor will perform your treatment using ultrasound guidance to enable them to locate and treat the damaged vein. Once the foam is injected the vein will begin to close and the body will eventually absorb the closed vein. Your body has plenty of other veins to reroute blood flow, thus there is no cause for concern when damaged veins are eliminated using Varithena.

What can you expect from the treatment?
This treatment is done in our state-of-the-art office, without the need for general anesthesia, and you are able to go home the same day. Many patients are able to resume regular activities the same day, or the day following their treatment.
