Radiofrequency Ablation for Varicose Veins
This is a minimally invasive technique which uses radio-frequency energy to close a diseased vein, letting your body absorb it. This technique generates a controlled amount of heat inside the blood vessel, injuring the inner lining of the vein wall to shut it down. You can choose to have a little sedation or be awake and alert during the procedure, as it is quick and nearly painless. There is a short recovery period in our office, and you are able to walk out afterwards.
How is it done?
Using ultrasound, your vein doctor will locate the target vein. They will insert a thin, flexible tube, called a catheter into the diseased vein through a tiny puncture incision in the skin. Using radio-frequency energy through the catheter, they will treat the vein causing it to seal and over time, fade and disappear.
What happens when that vein goes away?
When the diseased vein is gone, the blood gets redirected to other veins improving blood flow in the leg. It will reduce your leg pain and the other symptoms related to varicose veins. The visible signs of varicose veins will also be reduced over time.
What can you expect after the treatment?
You are able to resume your normal lifestyle right away. It’s important to remain active, just don’t overdo it. You should avoid strenuous exercise for several weeks to allow for healing. You’ll need to wear compression stockings after this type of treatment for a short period of time, and you may have some slight discomfort and bruising.
